Homeopathic Study Group at TLC

Great news! We now have a date set to start our new 8- week Homeopathy Group. Wednesdays starting June 28th @ 6:30 pm. This is a terrific opportunity to learn the basics of what Homeopathy is and how to get started using it. Classes will be at our office in Newcastle, and available interactively via the internet.

Homeopathic medicine was the mainstay medical medicine before the advent of synthetic pharmaceuticals. At that time there was over 150 homeopathic hospitals operating in the United States, and many more around the world. Germany and France continued relying on homeopathy even as pharmaceuticals became available, whereas in the US it fell out of favor mainly due to the AMA focus and promotion of synthetic pharmaceuticals. Homeopathy is resurging in popularity as a safe and effective alternative to modern drugs with their dangerous side effects and high cost.

Many homeopathic medicines (remedies) are widely available over the counter and can be used to treat virtually any type of disease, allergy, or injury. There are no harmful or toxic side effects as with pharmaceuticals. They are safe for children and animals. Homeopathic medicines are regulated by the FDA and manufactured under strict guidance and regulations. Homeopathic remedies do not simply cover the pain or symptoms as does pharmaceuticals, but actually support the body’s natural healing capacity to uproot and cure the issue. Even long standing chronic issues can be addressed when properly used.

Our 8-week course is written by Joette Calabrese. She is a classically trained homeopath with years of experience. But even more importantly, for the past several years she has been traveling to Kolkata India to work and study with the Doctor’s Banerji, a family of medical doctors also classically trained in homeopathy, who together, over three generations of working strictly with homeopathy, are world renowned for their ground breaking work in healing all types of disease and injuries with homeopathy. Today they see over a 1,000 patients a day in the worlds largest clinic of this type.

We will be meeting at our office in Newcastle, but will also be set up online so those at home who wish to join us but cannot be here can join in via internet, or phone. The study groups are a fun way to share our experiences and learn how to get started with homeopathy.

The course book must be ordered thru Joette’s by June 7ty to allow for shipping and homework before the group starts. The cost of the course book is $47.00 + shipping. In addition, the cost for joining the group for the 8 week period is $50.00 prepaid. Our hosting fee can be paid by check when you come in, or by mail, or by credit card online at: www.paypal.com using our info; treeoflifecenter@roadrunner.com

The course book will be a important reference guide for you to refer to for as you begin your journey with homeopathy. Please call either Sylvia or myself for more information or to reserve you place.

What Is Homeopathy

Homeopathy is natural medicine. It is completely science based. Homeopathy was the prime method of medicine before the advent of pharmaceuticals. The United States alone had over a hundred homeopathic hospitals with some of the most notable doctors in the country at the turn of the century. Homeopathy proved far more effective against major disease outbreaks during this time than all other methods, including pharmaceuticals, with virtually no harmful side effects. It was only after the American Medical Association (backed by the pharmaceutical companies) convinced the public the new drugs were superior did Homeopathy lose its position of status.

“Homeopathy is a system of medicine that is fundamentally different from conventional (allopathic) medicine.  Whereas allopathic medicine focuses on suppression of symptoms, homeopathy seeks to correct the underlying imbalance that caused the symptoms in the first place. Homeopathy achieves this by strengthening the body’s own defenses, thereby allowing the body to heal itself”. (Joette Calabrese)

“Homeopathy is a safe, gentle, and natural system of healing that works with your body to relieve symptoms, restore itself, and improve your overall health. It is extremely safe to use, even with very small children and pets, has none of the side effects of many traditional medications, is very affordable, is made from natural substances, and is FDA regulated.” (http://www.homeopathycenter.org/)

We are very pleased to announce the beginning of our new Homeopathic Study Group that will be hosted by Tree Of Life Center For Wellbeing. These will may take place at our office, or locally, and may be also joined via the internet or by phone . The Homeopathic Study Group material is provided by our instructor, Joette Calabrese and is 8 week in duration.

As one of our core goals at the Tree Of Life Center for Wellbeing is holistic education. We firmly believe in the “Teach a man to fish” concept, especially when it comes to taking control of ones health. As Dr. Majid Ali (renowned pathologist and integrative medicine doctor) states, “The best doctor is the one in the mirror“. What he is alluding to is the power of the human body / energy system to heal and be well given the right (supportive) conditions. Homeopathy works in concert with this innate healing ability of the body to heal even the most challenging afflictions of man, and has demonstrated so for over 200 years.

More About Our Company

Do you need vitamins and nutritional supplements? Ideally no, however the short answer to this question is, for most people I believe yes. We would not need vitamins and nutritional supplements if the following conditions are consistently met:

  1. you have access to, and regularly eat, a balanced whole foods diet that includes a full range of nutrients(preferably organic) in balanced quantities, daily, year round that includes a balance of carbohydrates, proteins, fats & oils specific to your own unique genetic metabolic requirements.
  2. you are able to properly digest and assimilate all the nutrients in your diet.
  3. you have not been exposed to pesticides, harmful chemicals, or heavy metals.
  4. you do not have any genetic deficits that attribute to assimilation or utilization of nutrient’s or in your detoxification pathways.
  5. you have a balanced lifestyle that includes adequate rest, exercise, balanced social life, and managed stress.
  6. You do not consume processed foods that include preservatives, stabilizers, flow agents, coloring, processed sugars, detrimental packaging, denatured fats and oils.
  7. Antibiotics & many medications deplete key vitamins and minerals and friendly bacteria that produce vitamins in the gut.
  8. Surgeries, accidents, prolonged illness, all require additional nutritional support to help our body rebuild and recover. It’s difficult to eat enough of the foods we would need, even the very best of foods, to accomplish this.

Your first thought may be “are you kidding, who can do that”? Well, most people can’t, and that’s why I stated earlier I believe most people can benefit from nutritional supplements and vitamins. The truth is every one of our trillions of cells came into this world knowing what to do and how to do it. They are in a constant state of functioning doing their part of the whole organism, tearing down and building up, nourishing, detoxifying, creating energy, facilitating other co actions with other cells, organs, systems, in the body. In order for this process to work smoothly and effectively they all need a constant supply of fuel (nutrients), clean water, and oxygen as well as proper detoxification and elimination. Failure to do this will almost undoubtedly lead to a disease process. The mind blowing complicated process that are taking place at every moment, whether we are awake, or asleep, totally requires all of the necessary building blocks and nutritional support or else something does not work right. When things start going wrong it creates stress in the body. The body will do everything it can to compensate but over time the consequences add up and take their toll. We begin feeling more tired & fatigued, more aches and pains, don’t sleep as well, don’t function as well. This is when many people turn to coffee, soda, sugary foods, and vitamins to help prop them up. But is this really the way to do it? No, of course not.

Just to illustrate the importance of nutrients using a very basic diagram of the Krebs Cycle. The Krebs Cycle (a cycle of enzyme-catalyzed reactions in living cells that is the final series of reactions of aerobic metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fatty acids, and by which carbon dioxide is produced, oxygen is reduced, and ATP ( cellular energy) is formed). Each of our cells is like a small powerhouse in and of itself. Doesn’t matter if its a hair cell, heart, liver, lungs, skin, or wherever. Ever cell takes in oxygen and nutrients and creates energy. Looking at this basic graph you can see the importance of simple nutrients within the cycle. If any of these nutrients are missing or depleted it causes a break in the cycle, meaning function suffers.

William Wolcott, author The Metabolic Typing Diet, and leading authority of metabolic individuality states the following:

Our Food – Not What It Used To Be

For many reasons, our food today is sorely lacking in vital nutrients. Methods of storing, processing and preserving food often severely devitalize the food of its nutritional value. In addition, many of the modern techniques used to grow food faster, larger and on nutritionally depleted soils has destroyed the original, natural quality of our food supply. What appears to be an ear of corn, or a tomato, is in many cases quite different from the corn or tomato of 75 years ago. Some research into the differences between organic and inorganic foods has shown as much as a 2000% difference in some of the nutrients.

Our food today simply does not contain sufficient nutrient content to meet the demands of our modern lifestyles and to keep us in a state of good health. But suppose that you had the rare possibility of obtaining all of your food from natural, organic sources — beef and (raw) milk and butter from range fed cattle; fertilized eggs and chicken from home-raised, non-chemically fed or hormonally-treated chickens; fruits and vegetables from an organic garden and orchard, comprised of soil brimming with all the nutrients that should be there, homemade bread from whole, natural, organically-raised grains.

Certainly this would be an excellent source for your food supply, although for most people it would be impractical, if not impossible, considering the time involved. Even if it were possible, the chances would still be slim that you’d be able to obtain all of the necessary nutrients from your food, particularly if you have a health challenge. There are several reasons for this: _ First, the genetic requirement for nutrients varies tremendously between people. There can be a 2, 5 or even 10 fold difference in the need for certain nutrients. To meet this wide variation in need through just food could be quite difficult. _ Second, a busy, on-the-go lifestyle makes it almost impossible to eat your wonderful, organic foods at all of your meals on a daily basis. Time away from home, eating on the go, traveling, all sabotage your efforts at regular, healthy eating. _ Third, if your health is not optimum, the chances are excellent that there’s some deficiency in your capacity to digest and assimilate your food. So, if your food is already lacking in nutrients, and if the food you eat is only partially digested, and if what you digest is only partially assimilated, then you’d need to eat an awful lot of food to compensate for the nutrient deficiencies already present in the food along with your faulty digestion and assimilation.

It is important to understand that there’s a big difference between just getting enough nutrition to keep you going and in getting optimal nutrition for your Metabolic Type on a daily basis. The skyrocketing rise in degenerative diseases over the last 100 years is clear evidence that most people do not meet their optimal nutritional requirements.

Take Advantage of Supplements

In view of this predicament, nutritional supplements have a lot to offer – they supply a concentrated form of nutrients which can easily compensate for the lacks in our food supply. Supplements may also provide many additional advantages as well: _ Help Meet Daily Requirements If you have a lacking appetite, nutritional supplements can provide an excellent means of making sure that you get enough nutrients on a regular basis, without having to eat a large amount of food. _ Conserve Your Energy A major factor in building health is the creation and conservation of energy. The digestion of food, particularly if you consider the large amounts that may be needed to make up for a deficiency, requires far more energy than the digestion of a few nutritional supplements. _ Zero In On Metabolic Processes The various nutrients can be attached to different “carriers” which can greatly assist in getting them to specific sites in the body where they are needed. _ Overcome Food Aversions Supplements are an ideal way for you to get certain necessary nutrients from foods which you might find objectionable in taste, such as liver or bee pollen. _ Compensate For Lacks Many people, due to the nature of their work and their fast-paced lifestyles, find it difficult or even impossible to eat whole, natural food. They must often eat out, and may not be able to totally fulfill their Metabolic Type dietary requirements. Nutritional supplementation can compensate for such deficiencies in their diet. _ Stimulate, Substitute, & Support Nutritional supplements recommended in our metabolic programs work to stimulate weak areas, as well as to support rebuilding processes by supplying required raw materials. In addition, supplements can substitute for some function in the body that is currently inefficient. For example, hydrochloric acid supplementation can be used if your natural hydrochloric acid secretion is insufficient – a very critical issue. Without sufficient hydrochloric acid, it is very difficult for your body to digest and assimilate valuable nutrients, especially minerals. _ Avoid Reactive Foods If you have digestive weaknesses or allergic reactions to foods, nutritional supplements can allow you to readily and easily acquire nutrients which you may otherwise have considerable difficulty in getting. For instance, if you require certain amino acids available in red meat but you’ve lost the ability to readily digest and assimilate meat, you could acquire the amino acids in supplement form. _ Neutralize Environmental Adversities Compared to the pure and pristine world of less than a century ago, our modern environment itself poses a challenge to your health. Industrial air pollution,10,000 chemicals in our food supply, sick-building syndrome, holes in the ozone layer, chemically-treated drinking water, electro-magnetic pollution from appliances, cell phones, computer monitors, etc., chemical exposures in the workplace and at home, and high stress lifestyles, all place an increased demand for nutrients on your metabolism that may only be met through nutritional supplementation. _ Adjust Biochemical Processes Supplements, by providing concentrated forms of single nutrients, can provide delicate, fine-tuning adjustments to your body’s fundamental control systems. Your Metabolic Type not only needs sufficient raw materials from your diet, but it also needs specific balances of nutrients to activate your enzyme systems which control all of your body’s biochemical processes. For example, the Fast Oxidizer Metabolic Types need plenty of protein and fat in their diet, but the oxidative processes within the cells must have specific quantities and balances of nutrients in order to function efficiently – something which supplements can often provide when food can’t. _ Customize Your Nutrition Finally, and perhaps of greatest significance from the standpoint of balancing your body chemistry, nutritional supplements allow for the capacity to design multivitamin / mineral formulas that address the needs of the specific Metabolic Types, correcting imbalances in all the Fundamental Homeostatic Controls that are unique in each person.

So in a nut shell, we can use supplements and vitamins to help support the deficits we encounter, and as preventive measures, and as corrective balancing measures. This becomes more and more important in modern day lifestyles and environment, increased corporate mega agriculture, the decreasing nutritional value of processed foods (that not only do not provide adequate nutritional value, but actually put a huge additional burden on the body to breakdown, detoxify, and eliminate).

So this leaves us with the questions; what do I really need to support my health?  How do I choose between the millions of choices available? How do I know what to take and when and for how long? How do I justify the expense? How do I know if these are really helping or hurting me? These are just some of the questions I will be addressing in the next few post on this subject as well as touching more on the  categories listed earlier. Keep an eye out for the next post.

Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food” Hippocrates

Introducing Battenkill Brittle & Crumble

High Energy Snack and Breakfast

I’ve often wanted a healthy snack option for my clients after their massage therapy session. Many people can relate to feeling a bit ungrounded after their massage, and rightfully so. During a massage treatment we move a lot of energy around, get oxygen, blood, and circulation moving, loosen tight muscle groups that actually shift posture and balance (for the better of course). Why wouldn’t someone feel a bit ungrounded. Then you need to drive home, make dinner, help the kids with homework, yes you need to be able to function. So, I’ve wanted a snack option that would provide a sustained energy lift with a good protein source that wouldn’t be taxing to the digestive system or include the typical processed ingredients found in most all protein snack bars like processed sugars, colorings, preservatives, soy, carrageenan, dairy, gluten, or other health detracting ingredients.

So, I’m happy to announce I am now stocking Battenkill Brittle from a small company in Vermont.

Battenkill Brittle… Instant Energy That Lasts!

Battenkill Brittle and Battenkill Brittle Crumble are made with organic sunflower seeds, organic sesame seeds, organic pumpkin seeds, organic brown rice syrup, pure Vermont maple syrup and pecan meal.

Battenkill Brittle is a high energy snack and Crumble is the perfect addition to yogurt, oatmeal, waffles and salads. It is packed with nutrition and provides sustaining energy for any kind of physical activity, as a snack for students, or a pick-me-up at the office. (quoted from the company web site)

The Brittle comes 3 to a pack. I was amazed at how satisfying and sustaining one of these squares can be. I now use this to help me sustain my energy and focus thru my long days of massage therapy.

So, next time you are in for a massage check out our new display and try some for yourself. You may be as excitedly surprised as I was when I discovered these.

As many of you know, I’ve worked along with chiropractic doctors for over a decade. I can’t tell you how many patients I’ve worked with, in combination with chiropractic care, that had already gone the gamut of pain medications, muscle relaxers, anti inflammatory drugs, even surgery, and still had chronic pain with restricted mobility, and did not see significant results until beginning chiropractic and massage therapies. Often times drugs and surgery add further layers of pain and secondary health issues such as gut dysfunction, chronic nerve pain, high/low blood pressure, hyper cholesterol (as the liver pumps out cholesterol to fight inflammation from these interventions) and many other health complaints.

I often wonder where that patient would be at if holistic therapies such as chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, corrective strength training, yoga, had been employed before more invasive prescription medications and surgeries.

More About Our Company

Very broadly speaking, I provide 4 categories/levels of care; General Wellness Care, Acute Care, Corrective/Restorative Care, and Maintenance Care.

Each person is unique and requires a unique approach. And even as such, each individual may have different needs at each new session. Thus, I start each encounter with “What Can I Do For You Today”? I want to know what has brought you in today. If it is an ongoing issue, I want to know what has worked and what has not worked with everything you have done and tried, with  your last treatment session (here or elsewhere). If it is a new issue we will explore what may have led up to, and contributed to, your current complaints. Each of the levels of care, General Wellness Care, Acute Care, Corrective/Restorative Care, and Maintenance Care, may be approached independently, but more likely, together, to create the most ideal support for your current goals. Lets take a look at each category.

General Wellness Care

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” as the old adage goes. It is certainly true. General wellness care is something you make a priority because it makes sense. Instead of waiting until a problem arises general wellness care helps reduce the potential for problems to occur. In terms of your massage therapy session the goal would be to increase flexibility and circulation, which should reduce hypertonicity (tightness) of the muscles, break up adhesions (stuck tissue), which will increase range of motion in the joints and limbs. All these things go a long way to helping prevent future problems. When your muscles are able to relax to their normal resting length/tension you are less likely to become injured when lifting or performing other activities of daily living. When your circulation is optimal you will have healthier tissue, less discomfort, better energy, improved repair and renewal of your tissues, improved sleep (which is vital for repair and regeneration), improved mood and alertness.

Acute Care

When a injury occurs massage therapy can help the body heal quickly and as fully as possible. Any injury to the body puts into play many courses of action from inflammation to activate a immune response, neurological to inhibit use of the area (forced rest for recovery), and compensative mechanisms (eg; other muscle groups taking up the slack). Therapeutic massage provides help by helping the lymph system deal with dead and damaged tissue removal, removal of infection and immune complexes, lactic acid. Therapeutic massage helps overburdened muscles that are compensating for the inured area. Therapeutic/ neuromuscular massage identifies and releases trigger points (hypertensive areas) in the injured and compensative muscles/tendons/fascia. Trigger points may last indefinitely if not correctly treated causing less than optimal muscle function, referred pain, faulty joint alignments/tensions/function. Therapeutic massage can help maintain range of motion of the joint/limb while healing. (a good example of this is with a shoulder injury that can take months to heal. If shoulder range of motion is not maintained it may be lost). Therapeutic massage helps bring in fresh blood and oxygen along with nutrients to help the area repair and heal. Massage can also help reduce the pain and discomfort, not only for the area of injury, but for the whole body. Any injury presents a stress, both emotionally, and internally/physically. Massage is very helpful for reducing this stress and goes a long way to helping the healing process.

Corrective/Restorative Care

After the acute phase the body can either be healed or enter a state of chronic dysfunction. Chronic dysfunction means there is always some remaining issue resulting from the injury. It may be a constant or intermittent achy feeling, maybe range of motion is not as good as it used to me. It may mean you are more prone to re-injury of the area than before the initial injury. Chronic dysfunction of a inadequately healed injury can, and often does, result in a compensation pattern that itself becomes a chronic pain or weakness. An example of this is a knee injury that changes the way you walk for an extended period of time. Over time the compensatory muscle patterns that set in change the way you walk and the position of the hips and low back which can cause sciatic type of pain or even chronic neck pain. The other knee may start having problems, or the ankles. Muscle imbalances that affect the positioning of the joint may lead to arthritic type of complaint in that area or create trigger points that begin to set up other compensation patterns.

Pain-Cycle_

Therapeutic massage along with corrective exercise training can help correct chronic dysfunction. When I am working on the body I am looking at it in terms of balance. What is the length/tension relationship of all the muscles controlling the joints, limbs, torso? What is tight and what is lose? Are there trigger points involved? Are there scar tissue restrictions? Where is the pain and how is the person compensating? What activities of daily living are contributing to these patterns? Various massage techniques are employed. Trigger point therapy, scar tissue/adhesion release, circulation, mobility via active and passive range of motion exercises and muscle energy techniques. By reducing the hypertonic muscles, releasing scar tissue, etc, corrective exercises to strengthen the weakened areas can be more effective. There is a rule in physiology that essentially states the opposing muscle groups to a hypertonic muscle group will be weak and stretched, or vise versa . What this means is, if your core and abdominal muscles (stomach) are weak and inactive from lack of exercise/poor lifestyle choices/C-section birthing/or any other reason, the back muscles will be tight and overpowering. So to try and do abdominal strengthening (core exercises, sit ups, etc) will not do much for the abdominals, and will most likely cause back pain, unless the over tight back muscles are first release/relaxed. Often times I see with chronic low back pain the muscle imbalance I have described, weak core and tight back. When the person bends over to lift something the abdominals are not able to stabilize the hips and a low back spasm occurs to try and stabilize the area. When massage and corrective exercise are properly combined it can be very effective in helping to correct a chronic injury or pain pattern.

Maintenance Care

Maintenance care is similar to wellness care except with more emphasis on maintaining specific areas that had previously been involved in injury or chronic patterns. In my experience I have seen areas of injury that have healed are often more prone to injury/reinjure than those that have not been injured previously. This brings us back to the first principle I mentioned about a ounce of prevention. This is where your investment in yourself pays off.

Putting it all together.

So when you come in for your next session I always ask what is going on. Maybe this week has been the week from hell and your nerves are fried, you haven’t been breathing optimally, and you simply need to chill out, breathe, release the tension and stress. In this case we’ll put on some chill out music, keep talking to a minimum, and do a full body Swedish Massage to whisk the stress away. In this case deep tissue work would only add additional stress to the body.

Or maybe we need to focus specifically on the neck tension that’s been causing a headache all week along with tight shoulders and back. It may be the hip pain or low back pain that’s had you all week. We can either focus the entire session on all the surrounding areas to work out that issue, or we can incorporate a bit of both, relaxation with focused deep tissue therapy. It is all totally up to you and what your goals are. I will always listen and discuss your options to give you the very best session for your specific needs. To continue your progress in between sessions I can recommend stretching and strength exercises to help you. Individual strength training sessions are available as well to help you with your home program.

Tree of Life Center For Wellbeing BBB Business Review

About BBB (excerpts from their web site):

BBB Accreditation is an honor – and not every business is eligible. Businesses that meet our high standards are invited to join BBB. Businesses deemed to meet Accreditation Standards are presented to the BBB’s Board (or designees) for review and acceptance as a BBB Accredited Business. To read more about BBB Accreditation Standards, click here.

Our Mission:
BBB’s mission is to be the leader in advancing marketplace trust. We do this by:

  • Setting standards for marketplace trust
  • Encouraging and supporting best practices by engaging with and educating consumers and businesses
  • Celebrating marketplace role models
  • Calling out and addressing substandard marketplace behavior
  • Creating a community of trustworthy businesses and charities

BBB sees trust as a function of two primary factors – integrity and performance. Integrity includes respect, ethics and intent. Performance speaks to a business’s track record of delivering results in accordance with BBB standards and/or addressing customer concerns in a timely, satisfactory manner.

BBB ensures that high standards for trust are set and maintained. We exist so consumers and businesses alike have an unbiased source to guide them on matters of trust. We provide educational information and expert advice that is free of charge and easily accessible.

All BBB accredited businesses have agreed to live up to our Standards for Trust,   a comprehensive set of best practices for how businesses should treat the public in a fair and honest manner. To review our Standards for Trust, click here.

BBB does not compare businesses against each other but rather evaluates businesses against our standards – and our standards clearly speak to the character and competence of an organization.

BBB is the resource to turn to for objective, unbiased information on businesses. Our network of BBBs allows us to monitor and take action on thousands of business issues affecting consumers at any given time.

BBB is your key adviser, most reliable evaluator and most objective expert on the topic of trust in the marketplace.
